Diabetes

Diabetes occurs when the body does not make insulin or when the insulin that is made is not working properly. This leads to increased blood glucose levels and diabetes. Types of diabetes are: type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes.

The treatment for type 1 and type 2 diabetes is different. Type 1 diabetes is treated with insulin, as in type 1 diabetes, there is a lack of insulin being produced because of autoimmune or other causes of damage to the pancreas.

Type 2 diabetes is treated with diet, exercise and medications if needed. The medications are usually oral medicines, but in some cases insulin is also needed. Diabetics can suffer from diabetes neuropathy which may impact on their bowel and bladder control.
