Continence Foundation of Australia National Conference 2011

The 20th National Conference on Incontinence is just one month away, so its time to start planning your stay in Melbourne. 

This year’s National Conference on Incontinence will be held from the 16-19th November and the program boasts renowned international speakers, specialist workshops and social events. 

Hosted by the Continence Foundation of Australia, the conference caters for all medical, nursing, physiotherapy and specialist health professionals in the incontinence field. The program has been designed to provide a comprehensive trade exhibition to keep attendees up to date with the latest industry new and trends as well as in-depth scientific presentations and discussions.

Program

Billed as a truly multidisciplinary event, the conference will host a number of continence workshops as well as guest speakers from Australia and overseas covering an interesting and varied range of topics reflecting the continued diversity within the field of incontinence.

Presenting on the latest research in the field of continence prevention, treatment and management this year's keynote speakers include:

  • Prof. Christine Norton – Professor of Clinical Nursing Innovation, Imperial College Healthcare & Bucks New University, UK.
  • Prof. James Gillespie – Professor of Human Physiology, Newcastle University, UK.
  • Kari Bø – Vice President, International Organization of Physical Therapists in Women’s Health, Norway
  • Prof. Allan Cottenden - Professor of Incontinence Technology, University College London, UK
  • Dr. Yves Heloury – Professor of Paediatric Urology, Monash University, Melbourne.

For those interested in networking or just meeting like-minded professionals there will be several social events including a welcome reception and conference dinner.

The welcome reception is an informal get-together included for all registered delegates.
 
The conference dinner will be held on-site and is optional but supported by the conference. The dinner will host several awards including Carer of the Year, CFA Best Paper and various Industry Awards. 

Location

This year’s conference will be held at the purpose built Crown Conference Centre, Melbourne. The central location of the conference will also provide delegates the opportunity to explore metropolitan area of Melbourne. Famous for its multicultural atmosphere, cosmopolitan feel, fine cuisines and world class fashion, Melbourne has something on offer for everyone.

This year Kimberly-Clark will be hosting a free meet-and-greet cocktail function followed by a twilight tour of Melbourne for conference delegates from 5pm on Tuesday 15 November. The tour will begin with canapés and drinks at the Mantra Southbank then proceed with an exciting one hour journey through the wonderful city of Melbourne to showcase what the city has to offer.

Consumer recall: TRIAD Sterile Lubricating Jelly 3g sachet

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has been advised that TRIAD Sterile Lubricating Jelly, 3g sachet, with lot numbers beginning with 7, 8, 9 or 0, is being recalled as it may not have been properly sterilised.

Use of a product that may not have been properly sterilised could result in a local infection at the site it is applied.

This product is mainly used by healthcare professionals, however it may also be used by patients or carers at home, to assist in urinary catheterisation or other applications.

Consumers or carers may have purchased this product over the internet or from retailers who sell continence aids.

Information for consumers

  • Immediately discontinue use of the product if the batch number begins with 7, 8, 9 or 0.
  • Contact your Doctor if you have been using this product and have any concerns.
  • For information on return of the product, refunds/credit policy and replacement products please contact your place of purchase.

19th National Conference on Incontinence

The 19th National Conference on Incontinence was held at the Alice Springs Convention Centre on 27-30 October 2010. This multidisciplinary conference provided a platform for the latest research in the field of continence prevention, treatment and management.

There were many papers of interest one in particular drawing on the need to assist the carers of people who suffer from incontinence. In the research, presented by Professor Jan Paterson from Adelaide’s Flinders University, there was found to be only a few studies that investigated the experiences of family members who cared for their loved ones in the home. These people did not access health care services readily and the carer strain was evident in most cases. This then led to premature admission to aged care facilities.

The overall message was to make the public aware that there are services available to lessen the burden for the caregiver and to keep the person in the home environment for as long as possible.

Another interesting paper was presented by Professor Hans Smola, currently Professor of Dermatology at the University of Cologne, Germany and is medical director of Paul Hartmann in Germany.

He spoke on incontinence associated dermatitis (IAD) which is an inflammatory skin disease that can occur when the skin is in contact with urine and faeces for a prolonged time. It can also occur if the skin has been in contact with some detergents or abrasive skin cleaners. This is mostly seen in frail aged skin and when there is skin breakdown.

Intensive skin care and hygiene for the people over time can reduce the inflammation of the damaged skin and repair it to a healthy state. The doctor may also prescribe some topical long – term treatment to help heal the affected area.

The appropriate incontinent product with high absorbency should be considered. Again emotional and physical problems for the sufferer and carer strain were mentioned as one of the major problems of this particular disease.

Carers Queensland has announced its successful registration as a National Registered Training Organisation, offering courses to eligible family carers from March.

Eligible family carers in Queensland can undertake training in Certificate III in Community Services Work, qualifying them to work as residential support workers, community workers, client contact workers, case workers and support workers upon graduation.

In January, Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot announced more than $4 million in one-off funding grants for 269 services across Australia that provide respite for carers.
